“Jolly Roger Bay” Sheet Music, from Super Mario 64

Format: PDF
Difficulty: Intermediate
Info: This song is usually called “Dire, Dire Docks” after the more difficult water world, but I was terrified of that level as a kid, so I’ve always referred to it as JRB.

The syncopations in the sheet music can look intimidating, but if you ignore the exact note durations and play what feels right to you, it should sound fine, since the JRB theme has an improvisatory feel anyway. I just wanted to get as close to the original recording as I could.

  1. If music be the food of love, play on,
But falls into abatement and low price
    Give me excess of it...

    I love your music!

Did you do the comet observatory medley by ear?

  2. Hi Tianming! Thank you very much! Yeah, all of my piano videos so far have been by ear. Sometimes I learn to play pieces using the sheet music that I've made for myself, but the Comet Observatory medley was paper-free.

  3. Aaaaargh. I'm so jealous. I can only play off paper. I've never had a knack for doing stuff by ear or writing my own stuff. I think what you do is amazing. And you're choice in music is impeccable ;D FF music, Zelda, Mario Galaxy. Couldn't be in love with you more xD

What gave you the determinations to studying music in university?

  4. I like your taste, too. ;)

To tell you the truth, FF4 is the only Final Fantasy game that I've played. But I admire Nobuo Uematsu and the FF soundtracks - I even road tripped with some friends to the Final Fantasy: More Friends concert in Los Angeles a few years back! It was a great experience, really (really really) different than a normal symphony concert.

As for how I came to study music in university, I guess I've loved music too much for too long not to. I've been playing video game songs on the piano and composing since I was a kid, and I just don't see myself being happy with much else. Maybe I'm dooming myself to live in a cardboard box, but hopefully I can avoid that.

  6. Ha! I hated the levels where you had to go underwater!

But I love this music. I found a guitar tab for two basic guitar parts a long time ago, and transcribed them for piano. The two versions are so different and so similar... I should put up a video on Youtube or something. :P

  11. That's interesting that you (and other posters) were terrified or hated Dire Dire Docks. I LOVED that level BECAUSE of the music! I loved how it would subtly and seamlessly transition as you enter the water.
